How It Works

A tri-lobular screw has a slightly three-lobed thread section. Driven into a plain hole, it rolls a mating thread rather than cutting one, so no nut or tapped hole is needed.

Advantages

  • Thread forms its own mating thread
The three-lobed section rolls a thread into the hole instead of cutting it, so no nut or tapped hole is needed.
  • Stays put once driven

The lobed section is not round, so it stays in interference with the thread it has formed and resists turning back.

  • Pan head with cross recess

The pan head gives a flat bearing face against the panel and a rounded top profile. The cross recess takes a standard driver bit.

  • Thread series matched to the host material
Lobe geometry, pitch and point are set for the material being fastened into; the series used for thermoplastics is not the same as the series used for sheet metal.

Industry Applications

Sheet Metal and Die-Cast Housings

Used in panels, enclosures and cast housings where the back of the part cannot be reached, so the fastener has to hold in the host material with nothing behind it.

Thread Forming Without Tapping

Used where the screw forms its own thread in a drilled or moulded hole, so a separate tapping operation comes out of the line.

Dark Finish on Visible Fixings

Specified where the fixing stays in view on the finished product and the dark surface is meant to match the panel around it.
